Winter Sunshine Walk

Each walking day breakfast will be at 9.00 am.  Departure at 10.00.  Walking, with rest stops/bar stops and lunch, till approx  4.00 pm. Return to shower and change clothes then relax in front of the open fire with a glass of wine before supper, which will be served about  8.00 pm. We use a 4x4 as transport to and from the trailheads

The routes chosen on the walks may vary a little according to weather conditions but the basic itinerary is as follows:-

  • Day 1: The start of your Winter Sunshine holiday with arrival at our base in Orgiva, just five minutes walk from the cheerful bars and shops of the market town which is invisible from the house in its rural setting.
  • Day 2: Walking in the dramatic Valley of Poqueira, surrounded by the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, probably covered in snow. We visit the little white villages clinging to the slopes of Mulhacen, the highest mountain of mainland Spain.
  • Day 3: Walking above the valley of the Rio Chico we find a stunning panorama of the Alpujarras, from the highest mountains to the Mediterranean sea. We then follow woodland paths by rushing streams.
  • Day 4: A rest day with the opportunity to visit the famous city of Granada and see the fabulous Palace of the Alhambra, or walk the fascinating alleys of the Moorish quarter, the Albaicin.
  • Day 5: Walking in the Eastern Alpujarra. From high on a ridge you will have an arial view of the contorted sandstone country below. We spend the night in Yegen, where Gerald Brennan lived in the 1920's. He later wrote 'South from Granada', describing his life in Andalucia.
  • Day 6: Trekking from the tiny village of Lobras up an ancient trail to Juviles. Ascent of Fuerte, which was the site of a 10th century fortress, now disappeared, but with wonderful views. Return to base.
  • Day 7: Walking in the coastal mountains, the Sierra de Chaparral, we follow a narrow trail between villages which starts in sub-tropical fruit orchards then climbs through forests of umbrella pines and dramatic, jagged limestone outcrops.
  • Day 8: The end of your winter walking holiday and time to say goodbye. ...................................................................How to Book
